David Phillips, A Life Remembered Ten Years Later

How does one sum up the trajectory-shifting influence a single gospel-focused mentor can have on your life? How does one sum up a mentor whose aim is to point you to Christ, the one through whom the entire universe was spoken into existence, the one through whom redemption came and the entire cosmos would one day be made right again?

How does one sum up a person who points others to Christ through the scriptures, the content of which was articulated over the ages by modern giants of the faith, resting on the shoulders of other giants of the faith through church history, going all the way back to the Apostles? How does one sum up a man whose aim was to bring you the gospel, not merely for salvation, but growth in the faith? It is indeed an inestimable gift, a rare jewel.

A Theological Journey to Presbyterianism

As a teenager growing up in east Fort Worth, in the summer of 1995, I can remember it well. Stuck in the doldrums of my own sin, like a washing machine on spin cycle, I was miserable. With a number of dark industrial bands blaring in the background of my room, in anger I tried to ignore and suppress the Lord calling me, until one day this guy showed up to my house, in my room, and brought a presence with him that I couldn’t explain. We chatted some, then he looked at my CD collection and said very directly, “You need to get rid of all these and throw them away.” Now normally, anyone else could have told me this and I would have cynically blown it off as some religiousy call to “clean my act up.” Not that day.

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Read Philippians 4:4-7

B. ILLUS. Chaplaincy. Summer 2002. I was assigned to the reception station at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. I was counseling teenagers just about to step into Basic Training. The ones who stopped by my office were stressed and anxious about girlfriends they left behind, mean drill sergeants, the radical culture change, etc. and I did my best to soothe their worries and give them hope. One afternoon, halfway through my assignment, the Deputy Assistant Installation Chaplain and my Brigade Chaplain (my boss) entered my office. They told me that the Red Cross just informed them that my dad had had a massive coronary and was being care-flighted to a hospital 100 miles away and that my mom was in a car trailing them. I was to be released immediately to fly home and take care of family business. The counselor had now become the counselee.

PingWi-Fi Pinned Between a Rock and a Golf Ball

Trademark dispute over blog name pits Ping against ‘Ping’ – Star-Telegram

The Star-Telegram is reporting on a good friend of mine, Kent Pingel, whose site PingWi-Fi.com, appearing on the bottom of the menu column at the right, has been requested by Ping, Inc. to give up his site name and brand because they claim it conflicts with theirs. I mean the big guys can’t have anything that even comes close to their own name and brand right, so the exec’s can keep playing, well, golf? As the article reports, when Kent Pingel filed for a trademark on his site name and brand, he was immediately flagged down by Ping, Inc. and legally pursued to change the site name. The big guys against the little guy. There’s a lot of that going around these days. You can read the rest here.

Testimony of Catherine Westerfield

Testimony of my mother Catherine Westerfield, March 7, 1950 – June 28, 2001

I can remember my conversion at the age of five so very well. It was a Sunday evening worship service. It’s remarkable, as I look back at how God revealed Himself so clearly – His infinite love for me. I was both in a state of bliss and crying at the same time. He revealed how He chose me, yes me, to be His own from all eternity; always in His love – I would never be without Him. I believed in His death on the cross for me personally, Catherine, and His resurrection and ascension into Heaven to be with His Father. I came to these revelations by the intense drawing of the Holy Spirit. He knew the difficulties that lay ahead in my life. Through all of the abuse and mental problems I never doubted my security of salvation or His infinite love for me. I did question, but never doubted that this was His eternal plan for me.

I won’t go into all the pain and problems I’ve had. God says He will give us trials. They came one right after another except for the period of time when I was first married in 1977 until December of 1983.

But we do not look at our trials as do unbelievers. We do not depend on status among our peers, acquiring possessions or position in life as a way of escaping our true need to simply lean on Christ’s breast and know He is refining us.

U-Verse Install on Saturday!

Finally, the long wait is over for the Westerfunk network … U-Verse will allegedly be installed on Saturday between 1 and 3 pm. We’ll see how that turns out. Just want to make everyone aware now that all sites will be unavailable until I can bring them back up on the new service.

Also, one of these days I’ll start blogging again. Had a long run of difficulties and well, laziness to some degree, spiritual and otherwise. So, I’ll be returning soon.

Asher Reid Westerfield

We have been blessed with yet a second healthy baby boy, Asher Reid Westerfield! He was born on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10:13 am. He is 6 lbs, 8 oz. and 19″ long. We have received an unbelievable grace. My heart is overjoyed both with a wonderful wife who bore the burden of carrying the little guy, and the now two sons I’ve been blessed with. So exciting! I pray 1) for His grace to fall on them, that 2) they would be born again and brought to new life by the Spirit’s power, in order that 3) they may live lives for His glory and not their own, which will fade like a mist. He is their (and our) only hope of life now and for eternity. Only by His work and not our doing. Praise God for baby Asher!

AT&T Digging Up My Yard

Update 8.6.2009: Well, to give them credit, they did leave a note on my front door letting me know the day before. So, nevermind. It is AT&T and they are putting Uverse in the neighborhood. So, that’s pretty cool!

Okay. I know AT&T or the power company can come and dig up your yard as they please, since they basically own the right to that portion of your yard. But it would at least be a nice courtesy to call and let residents know their yard will be all torn up when they get home. They just came this morning and started digging with no advisory or note. Even a flier would have worked. Come on guys …
